This beautiful reproduction poster has been re-mastered from an original 1938 whimsical pictorial map for Wyoming, by artist Thomas G. (Tom) Carrigen (1896-1967). Carrigen used a unique artistic device by depicting the map as a mural being painted by four Native Americans, two standing on the ground and two on ladders.

The vibrant colors and detail of this classic image have been painstakingly brought back to life to preserve a great piece of history.

This high-resolution image is printed on heavy archival photo paper, on a large-format, professional giclée process printer. The poster is shipped in a rigid cardboard tube, and is ready for framing.

The 24"x32" format is an excellent image size that looks great as a stand-alone piece of art, or grouped as a visual statement. These posters require no cutting, trimming, or custom framing, and a wide variety of these frames are readily available at your local craft or hobby retailer, and online.

A great vintage print for your home, shop, or business!

HISTORY OF PICTORIAL MAPS & THOMAS G. CARRIGEN

PICTORIAL MAPS

Pictorial maps usually show an area as if viewed from above at an oblique angle. They are not generally drawn to scale in order to show street patterns, individual buildings, and major landscape features in perspective. While regular maps focus on the accurate rendition of distances, pictorial maps enhance landmarks and often incorporate a complex interplay of different scales into one image to give the viewer a more familiar sense of recognition. With an emphasis on objects and style, these maps cover an artistic spectrum from childlike caricature to spectacular landscape graphic, with the better ones being attractive, informative, humorous, and highly accurate. Some require thousands of hours to produce.

As with many humorous pictorial maps, this one is filled with small, captioned illustrations. Some depict recreational activities such as skiing, bronco riding and fishing, and others referring to the state’s history. Yellowstone Park with a spouting geyser dominates the upper left corner, and features the slogan, “It’s All Yours.” The park area also features waving park rangers under slogans such as “Don’t feed the bears,” and “Yes, fishing is free.” A settler playing a banjo is perched atop a covered wagon blazoned “Oregon or Bust,” while a woman pokes her head out the back and comments, “Do we go by way of Hollywood?” Hell’s Half Acre features a red devil brandishing a pitchfork chases away a frightened couple.

THOMAS G. CARRIGEN

Thomas G. (Tom) Carrigen (1896-1967) grew up in Denver, Colorado, and attended the University of Denver. This illustration is a departure for Carrigen who was best known for his documentary photos of Wyoming.

Carrigen served in the army for two years during World War I, and after the war he worked a variety of jobs before opening a photography studio in 1922, in Casper, Wyoming. He operated the photography business with his wife and daughter for over 35 years, retiring in 1958. He left behind a collection of approximately 30,000 images of portraits, events and landscapes, which are housed in the collection of the Wyoming State Archives.
