HISTORY OF LUDLOW CALIFORNIA ON ROUTE 66

Ludlow, California, is a historic Mojave Desert town that evolved from a 19th-century railroad water stop into a vital Route 66 oasis, ultimately becoming a "ghost town of two eras" following the construction of Interstate 40. Founded in 1882 or 1883 to serve the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, it was named for William B. Ludlow, a railroad master car repairer.

The discovery of gold and silver in the nearby hills (Bagdad-Chase Mine) turned Ludlow into a bustling supply town. The Ludlow-Southern Railway was built in 1903 to transport ore from mining sites to the Santa Fe Railway line in Ludlow.

As mining waned, the town pivoted to supporting travelers on the National Old Trails Road, which became Route 66 in 1926. During the heyday of Route 66, Ludlow became an essential stop for food, gas, water, and lodging to escape the desert heat. The town boasted motor courts (bungalow cabins), the streamline moderne Ludlow Cafe, and service garages.

The completion of I-40 bypassed the town, causing most businesses and residents to leave. Often called a "ghost town of two eras" town, it faded twice: first as the railroad and mining activity slowed in the 1940s, and later when Route 66 was replaced by the interstate. Today, Ludlow operates as a tiny, active pit stop for travelers at the I-40 offramp, while the remnants of "Old Ludlow" (abandoned buildings, a cemetery, and the 1908 Mercantile building) lie to the east, providing a glimpse into its past.
