HISTORY OF ROUTE 66 IN SAN BERNARDINO AND THE CITRUS BELT CAFÉ
 
Route 66 was established in 1926, and the section through San Bernardino's business district became a thriving artery for cross-country travelers. The original route and later alternate alignments defined the city's growth, serving as a hub of commerce before Interstate highways rerouted traffic away from the city center.
 
The Citrus Belt Café in San Bernardino was located at 599 E Street, on the Business Loop of Route 66. It was a popular stop for travelers in the late 1930s, known for its bustling atmosphere, comforting food, and being one of the first establishments in the area to have air conditioning. The café was part of a "restaurant row" on Third Street that served travelers during the Great Depression. The cafe operated at this address for at least thirty years.
