MORMON ROCKS & LOCOMOTIVE NO. 3751 HISTORY

MORMON ROCKS

Mormon Rocks are iconic sandstone formations in the Cajon Pass along Highway 138, just west of former U.S. Route 66. The rocks are named after the 1851 pioneers who traveled this route to settle San Bernardino.

The pioneers camped here during their descent from the pass ridgeline, and the rocks became associated with the Mormon settlers. Some early maps called them the "Rock Candy Mountains" because of their colorful banded mineral layers. Old-timers also called them the "Chanting Rocks" because when strong desert winds blow through hollowed-out caves in the sandstone, they can make a low humming sound.

The jutting formations were created by the San Andreas Fault, and they sit on the boundary zone between the North American and Pacific tectonic plates. The formations consist of ancient, 18-million-year-old river gravel and sand. Over millions of years, wind and rain carved deep grooves into the soft rock faces.

Beginning in the 1885, the Cajon Pass became a vital railway route. The Santa Fe Railroad laid tracks next to the rocks, making this a famous spot for train watchers today. The rocks are now part of the San Bernardino National Forest.

You can explore the site on the 1-mile Mormon Rocks Interpretive Trail, where you will see desert plants and fault-line geology up close.

LOCOMOTIVE 3751

Built in 1927 by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (ATSF) locomotive No. 3751 is a historic 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive. It is the oldest surviving 4-8-4 engine in the world. It routinely pulled passenger trains across the American Southwest at speeds exceeding 100 mph. In 1927, ATSF commissioned No. 3751 as its very first 4-8-4 steam locomotive.

No. 3751 pulled the final steam-powered passenger train for the Santa Fe Railway in August 1953. After a distinguished career, the locomotive was officially retired and donated to the City of San Bernardino, California, in 1957. For nearly three decades, it sat on an outdoor static display in Viaduct Park, exposed to the weather.

In 1985, a dedicated group of railfans formed the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society (SBRHS). They purchased the locomotive for one dollar and began a painstaking six-year restoration. In August 1991, No. 3751 moved under its own steam for the first time in 38 years.

Since its return to steam, No. 3751 has operated as a touring excursion engine, making numerous trips across the western United States from its home base in Los Angeles. The locomotive regularly undergoes federally mandated inspections to stay active, delighting rail enthusiasts and the public on special mainline excursions.
