HISTORY OF CARTY’S CAMP & NEEDLES CALIFORNIA ON ROUTE 66
CARTY’S CAMP
Before Route 66, the National Trails Highway took travelers through Needles, CA. In 1923 William Carty and Dick Mansker built a camp to accommodate those travelers with some 28 cabins. Named Carty’s Camp when Carty bought out his partner, it grew to have ‘cabins, shade, a store well stocked with groceries and other goods, an oil station, auto accessories, and an up-to-date lunchroom with five ton ice storage’. Carty sold out in 1940, and it became a Standard Oil station. When the 66 Motel opened next door, the demand for the basic cabins declined and they were soon closed up. The service station closed around 1971.
NEEDLES
Needles, California, is a historic desert city located on the Colorado River that was founded in 1883 as a crucial railroad hub. Named for the jagged, needle-like peaks in the nearby Arizona mountains, it grew from a tent town into a vital transportation gateway, heavily influenced by the railroad, the Mojave Indian Tribe, and Route 66.
The Mojave Indians inhabited the valley for thousands of years prior to European settlement, with evidence of their presence in local petroglyphs and trails.
Needles was established with the arrival of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad (later the Santa Fe Railroad), serving as a crucial crew change point and water stop, with a, El Garces Hotel later serving as a "crown jewel" of the Fred Harvey chain. Needles was officially incorporated as a California charter city on October 30, 1913. As the "Gateway to California," the town became a major stop for travelers on the "Mother Road," particularly for those crossing the Colorado River.
During World War II, the area was used for Gen. Patton's desert training maneuvers, a tradition of military activity that continued into the mid-1960s with Desert Strike operations.
The city is famously referenced in The Grapes of Wrath and is known as the childhood home of Charles Schulz, who based his character "Spike" (Snoopy's brother) in the area.
In 2026, the city is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Route 66, maintaining its identity as a railroad hub and recreation spot on the Colorado River.
