HISTORY OF THE BAGDAD CAFÉ
Bagdad, California was a railroad stop and small town about 50 miles east of Newberry Springs. The original town was founded in 1883 by the Santa Fe Railway and famously holds the U.S. record for the longest dry streak (767 consecutive days from 1912 to 1914). This water stop on the railroad was located on an old desert trail that became National Old Trails Road in 1912, and that rugged desert road became Route 66 in 1926.
The tiny desert town developed into a rest stop on the highway, and a gas station and café were built. The 1972 opening of Interstate 40 completely bypassed the town of Bagdad, stripping the tiny community of its steady stream of travelers and initiating a long decline into a ghost town.
By 1991, all original structures of the ghost town were demolished, but some concrete pads can still be seen today.
The Bagdad Café name was made famous by a 1987 film of the same name. The movie was actually filmed at the Sidewinder Café in Newberry Springs. The Sidewinder café adopted the Bagdad Café name, and it has become a favorite tourist destination on Route 66.
