HISTORY OF MOUNT TELEMARK SKI AREA

Mount Telemark, located near Cable, Wisconsin, was a pioneering Midwestern ski area founded by Tony Wise in 1947. Inspired by his time in the Bavarian Alps during WWII, Wise used a GI Loan to establish the hill, which quickly became a premier resort, and one of the first, alpine ski destinations in the region.

Mount Telemark opened on Dec. 13, 1947, with a Jeep-powered tow rope. By the 1950s, the resort added T-bar lifts and boasted 3,600-foot airstrip for "air-minded skiers." The hill at the resort had only 370 feet of vertical drop.

In 1972/1973 a massive 200-room, Brutalist-style lodge was built, becoming a hub for nightlife, dining, and music. In 1973, Tony Wise founded the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race, which began at the lodge and cemented the resort's status in the Nordic skiing world.

The resort began facing financial difficulties in the 1980s as cheap airfare allowed skiers to visit larger, western mountains. The resort underwent multiple bankruptcies, beginning in 1984, then 1998, and 2010. After decades of operation, the alpine ski lifts officially closed on May 5, 2010. Following a brief reopening, the lodge closed again in 2013, with the property eventually falling into disrepair.

The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation purchased the land in 2021 to protect it. The old lodge was demolished in 2021 to make way for the new "Mount Telemark Village," a year-round recreational center for biking, hiking, and skiing. The former site of the legendary downhill ski resort now functions as a "silent sports" hub and the home base for the annual American Birkebeiner race.
