HISTORY OF THE GLENN RANCH

Tucked away in the serene setting of Lytle Creek Canyon, the once-famous Glenn Ranch evolved from a successful working ranch into Southern California’s premier western-style resort.

Silas Glenn brought his family to Southern California via wagon train in 1860, and eventually started a ranch on 20 acres in the Cajon Pass area. While traversing the nearby canyons on a hunting trip, Glenn became enamored with a section of lush green flatland between the mountainous borders of Lytle Creek Canyon.

When Silas Glenn died in 1878, the Glenn Ranch had developed into the largest and most profitable ranch in the San Gabriel Mountains. Mourning or “Mother Glenn” as she became known, stayed on the ranch and may have taken in boarders to help with the expenses.

At age 75, Mourning Glenn was struggling to keep the ranch afloat, and in 1889, she asked James and Ellen Applewhite to help manage the ranch. By 1890, the Applewhites began developing the place into a full-service, western-style resort.

During the early 1900’s, the ranch became a favorite getaway for Hollywood dignitaries.  After several years of vacationing at the ranch, motion picture businessman Thomas “T.L.” Tally and his son Seymour purchased the property in 1920.

Tally sold the ranch property in 1952 to Lloyd Fredericks, a real estate man from Beverly Hills. Fredericks was admittedly unfamiliar with the dude ranch business, but he did have experience in hotel operations, and he ran the ranch as a family-owned business.

Through the 1960’s and 70’s, the property underwent a number of subdivisions, and saw several unsuccessful attempts to develop camps, foster homes and conference grounds.

The Fredericks sold the ranch property in 1977 to Bob Burlingame, owner of Burlingame industries, a major roofing tile corporation with a plant in Rialto.

As of 2005, the old portion of the ranch property has been beautifully brought back to life, and many of the old buildings have been refurbished.

The section of ranch property around the trout lake has been revitalized as an RV resort called Mountain Lakes. Well-manicured lawns surround the lake and modern facilities provide for all the needs of campers.
