HISTORY OF SUMMIT STATION, CAJON PASS
Summit Station, established in 1885, was a vital railroad stop at the crest of the Cajon Pass (near modern Highway 138 and Summit Post Office Road). For decades, it served as an operational hub and a legendary gathering spot for railway fans before its closure and dismantling in 1967.
The station was established when the California Southern Railroad (later the Santa Fe Railroad, now BNSF) laid its first track through the treacherous grade of the Cajon Pass. Sitting at a high elevation of nearly 4,300 feet, the station was critical for helper engines that were needed to push heavy freight and passenger trains over the steep 3% grade.
As diesel locomotives replaced steam engines, the need for a helper station diminished. The railroad closed the depot in 1967 and removed the tracks for line realignments.
The most famous piece of history at Summit Station was the Descanso. Originally built as an ornate funeral trolley car for the Los Angeles Railway in 1909, it was retired and later moved to Summit Station in 1940. It served as a beloved clubhouse and weekend getaway for railroad employees and railfans. In 1967, the Descanso was saved from the station's demolition and relocated to the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris, where it still resides today.
