SCHWINN BICYCLES

The Schwinn Bicycle Company, founded in 1895 by German immigrant Ignaz Schwinn and financial partner Adolf Arnold in Chicago, grew to become the dominant American bicycle manufacturer of the 20th century. At its peak in the 1960s, the company produced one out of every four bicycles sold in the United States.

The Schwinn Bicycle Company was stablished as Arnold, Schwinn & Company, capitalizing in the late-1890s American bicycle craze. Its initial high-quality line was marketed as "World Bicycles.” They introduced the revolutionary 2-inch "balloon tire" in 1933.

In 1938, Schwinn introduced the Paramount, a high-end racing bike. It was used to break the world bicycle speed record at 108.92 mph in 1941. Schwinn avoided mass retailers, selling instead through a highly trusted network of independent, authorized bicycle shops.

In 1963, Schwinn launched the iconic Sting-Ray featuring high-rise "ape-hanger" handlebars and a banana seat. Inspired by California youth culture, it became the bestselling bike in company history.

The Varsity was introduced in the 1970s to capture the 10-speed adult fitness boom, and it provided an affordable, albeit heavy, introduction to derailleur bicycles. Schwinn dismissed the emerging BMX and mountain bike movements as passing fads, allowing rivals like Specialized, Trek, and Mongoose to capture those markets.

A prolonged 1980 strike at the main Chicago factory caused Schwinn to source production overseas, heavily relying on Giant Manufacturing in Taiwan. Schwinn closed its historic Chicago factory in 1982 and eventually filed for bankruptcy in 1992.

Today, the Schwinn brand name survives under new corporate ownership. It is owned by Pacific Cycle (a division of Dorel Industries), which markets Schwinn bicycles primarily through mass-market retailers like Target and Walmart, alongside specialized e-bikes on the official Schwinn Bikes website.
