HISTORY OF NEPTUNE OUTBOARD MOTORS

Muncie Gear Works, established in 1907, entered the outboard motor market in 1930 with the Neptune brand. They produced various models, including a "Junior Single" (1.2 hp) and alternate firing twins.

The company also produced motors under other names, including Motorgo, Waterwitch, Sea Gull, Sea King, and Skipper.

Production was halted during World War II for wartime efforts and later resumed, with the company eventually relocating to different locations before ceasing production.

During World War II, Muncie Gear Works shifted its focus to jet engine production for the war effort. After the war, Neptune resumed outboard motor production but eventually moved from Muncie, Indiana.

From 1957 to 1960 the motor designation was AA1A, and changed to WC1 circa 1972.

This group of engines was the first of what later became known as the MIGHTY MITE style motors. They are easily distinguished by their spark plug, which was mounted on the starboard side of the cylinder head. With the exception of the piston and cylinder bore, almost all the parts were interchangeable within this first group.

Muncie Gear Works was sold in 1969, with operations moving to Florida and later to Connecticut. The "Mighty Mite" model was produced under the Termar Corporation by a former Muncie employee in Lehigh Acres, Florida, after the original company sold its assets.

Neptune motors are remembered for their early innovations and are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of antique boats and motors.
