HISTORY OF MARTIN OUTBOARD MOTORS

The Martin Outboard Motor was manufactured by a company founded by George Martin in 1943. Martin Outboards were produced after World War II from 1946 to 1954. The company's name, "Martin Motor" Division, stemmed from Martin's initial demonstration of his motor design to company officials.

George Martin, an outboard racer from Indiana, developed a "poppet valve" intake system for 2-stroke motors that he believed would revolutionize the boating industry. In 1946, Martin introduced the first production models under the "Martin" name. The motors were produced through an unusual royalty-based manufacturing agreement with the National Pressure Cooker Company, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

The Martin company built about 300,000 motors through 1954. The company couldn't keep up with the horsepower race, and they ceased operation in the late 1950s. Spare parts for the Martin motors were sold to a private party in Wisconsin.

Martin models included the 20, 40, 45, 60, 66, 75, 100 and 200, with the model number roughly translating to the engine’s horsepower (e.g. 40 and 45 had 4.5 HP
