HISTORY OF EMERALD BAY CAMP AND HOTEL AND LAKE TAHOE
The Emerald Bay Camp and Hotel was located on the sheltered inlet bay of Lake Tahoe, in a grove of mature pines and cedars.
In 1880, Dr. Paul Kirby purchased land around Emerald Bay, and by 1884, he and his wife had built the Emerald Bay Resort, near the famous Vikingsholm Castle. The summer resort included a hotel, cottages, tents, and a steamer landing on the bay.
To get to the resort, guests could take the Southern Pacific Railroad to Lake Tahoe, and then board a steamer to the resort’s landing.
Guests could entertain themselves with a variety of amusements that included; bathing, boating, guided fishing trips, dancing, picnics, hiking, horseback riding, and cruises on the lake aboard the resort’s 40-foot motor launch.
The resort changed hands several times, and in 1953, it was sold to the State of California. It was closed in 1959, and all buildings were removed.
LAKE TAHOE
Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada of the United States. Lying at 6,225 ft, it straddles the state line between California and Nevada, west of Carson City. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, and at 122,160,280 acre-ft trails only the five Great Lakes as the largest by volume in the United States. Its depth is 1,645 ft, making it the second deepest in the United States after Crater Lake in Oregon (1,949 ft.)
The lake was formed about two million years ago as part of the Lake Tahoe Basin, with the modern extent being shaped during the ice ages. It is known for the clarity of its water and the panorama of surrounding mountains
