HISTORY – CONCORDE SST & ROGER BEZOMBES

CONCORDE SST – SUPERSONIC TRANSPORT

The Concorde SST (Supersonic Transport) was a pioneering British-French supersonic airliner that revolutionized air travel by flying at twice the speed of sound (or ~1,350 mph). Developed by Aérospatiale and British Aircraft Corporation, it entered service in 1976, crossing the Atlantic in under 3.5 hours, but was retired in 2003 due to high operating costs, low demand, and the 2000 crash.

The Concorde could cruise at 1,350 mph at up to 60,000 ft, cutting transatlantic travel time in half. The cutting-edge design was known for its "ogival" (ogee) delta wing, narrow fuselage, and iconic drooping nose for visibility during landing.

It was powered by four Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 turbojets with reheat, and could carry 92 to 128 passengers. It was also the first airliner with analogue fly-by-wire flight controls.

Development on the Concorde was initiated in 1962, and it was a joint project between France and the UK. It was inaugurated in 1976, and the aircraft’s primary routes were London-New York and Paris-New York.

The Concorde was retired by Air France in May 2003 and British Airways in October 2003. The primary reasons were high fuel consumption, maintenance costs, reduced passenger demand post-9/11, and the crash of Air France Flight 4590 in 2000, which shattered its reputation for safety.

ROGER BEZOMBES – COMMERCIAL ARTIST

Roger Bezombes (1913-1994) was a renowned French painter, sculptor, designer, and medalist. Bezombes studied in Paris, at the École des Beaux-Arts, and was heavily influenced by his friendship with contemporary artist Maurice Denis. His work was primarily in painting, and he adopted the saturated colors of Henri Matisse in landscapes and figure studies often based on observation of “exotic” cultures, notably North African and Mediterranean.
