HISTORY OF THE BLUE CUT DISTRICT
 
The Blue Cut district in the Cajon Pass was a historic Route 66 business district, and rest area in San Bernardino County. It is located near the mouth of the Cajon Pass, just north of Devore on present-day Cajon Blvd.
 
The Blue Cut area gets its name from the bluish-gray eroded earth known as "fault gouge," created by the grinding movement of the San Andreas Fault. During the Dust Bowl and Great Depression, authorities used the remote location as a checkpoint, temporarily detaining migrants traveling to California for background checks. After the 1930s, the district evolved into a functional roadside rest area, complete with a popular store, auto repair, and motel cabins.
 
The construction of Interstate 15 in the late 1960s bypassed this section of the old highway, leaving the businesses abandoned and gradually returning the district to wilderness.
