HISTORY OF SKI WHIZ SNOWMOBILES

Ski Whiz snowmobiles were produced by agricultural giant Massey Ferguson from 1968 to 1977, aiming to leverage the 1970s snowmobiling boom. Built in Des Moines, Iowa, these machines were known for being durable "snow tractors" with red hoods, powered by JLO engines.

Massey Ferguson entered the market in 1969 to diversify, producing machines known for being fast yet utilitarian. Early models reached speeds of 55 mph, while later models reached 65 mph. Options included electric start, tachometers, and cigarette lighters.

1969–1974: Early models like the 300, 350ss, 400sst, and 500sst were manufactured in Iowa. The 1973 models were "dramatically new," featuring a 50 lb weight reduction, black chassis, and improved styling. The lineup included the Formula I-IV, Whirlwind, Storm, and Chinook.

Due to declining sales, production was shifted to Scorpion Industries for the final 1976–1977 models.

Known for their robust, boxy, and utilitarian design, Ski Whiz sleds are now popular among collectors, with enthusiasts often restoring the "industrial strength" machines.
