Arizona Snow Bowl – Mount Agassiz History

The Arizona Snowbowl is one of the oldest continually operating ski resorts in the United States, established in 1938 on the western slopes of the San Francisco Peaks, north of Flagstaff. The resort operates primarily on the flanks of Mount Agassiz (Agassiz Peak), which rises to 12,360 feet and stands as the second-highest peak in Arizona.

Ole and Pete Solberg introduced skiing to the Flagstaff region in 1915 using homemade wooden skis on Mars Hill. The U.S. Forest Service granted a permit in 1938 for a ski lodge and road in Hart Prairie, near the base of Mount Agassiz.

A community contest in 1938 officially coined the name "Arizona Snow Bowl." From 1939 to 1940, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) cleared a primitive dirt access road and built a log cabin shelter.

The original lift at the Snow Bowl was a basic rope tow powered by a car engine. In 1944, the resort completely shut down due to strict World War II gasoline rationing.

The original CCC-built lodge, a beloved local hub, burned to the ground in 1952. In 1961, the first permanent chairlift running up the main Agassiz Peak alignment was installed. It was replaced in 1986 by a classic CTEC triple chairlift.

For decades, private entities struggled to stay profitable during low-snow seasons before modern snowmaking existed.

Despite federal lawsuits and ongoing tribal protests, snowmaking officially began in 2012, greatly improving consistent winter seasons.

Investor James Coleman purchased the resort in 2014, investing over $60 million in capital improvements. The historic 1986 Agassiz triple chair suffered a mechanical failure in early 2020, and the resort installed the Arizona Gondola. This high-speed Telemix lift uses a combination of 6-person chairs and enclosed cabins, cutting travel time to 11,500 feet down to just 7 minutes.

Today, the resort operates in the summer and fall for scenic rides, weddings, and disc golf, anchoring its historical hub around the base-area Agassiz Lodge.
