HISTORY OF WINTER SPORTS IN YOSEMITE

Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area, formerly known as Badger Pass Ski Area, located within Yosemite National Park, has been a favorite for generations of families and a pioneer in the history of winter recreation. The “original ski resort in California”, Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area was the result of increased interest in winter sports during the late 1920s and a Yosemite bid for the 1932 Winter Olympics.

Though Lake Placid was chosen instead, Donald Tresidder, President of Yosemite National Park and the Curry Co., realized the need for more winter facilities such as the Half Dome Village ice rink and the Yosemite Ski School, which taught its first skiers in 1928 on a small hill near the Yosemite Valley stables. The completion of the Wawona Tunnel provided winter access to the more challenging terrain around Chiquapin and Monroe Meadow areas. In 1934 one of the first electric ski tows on the west coast was built on what is now the Old Badger Pass Summit.

The Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area Day Lodge was completed in 1935 and two sleds known as the “Queen Mary” and “Big Bertha” were added to the “up-ski” the following winter. With continued innovations in the skiing mechanics and ski instruction, tens of thousands of visitors have enjoyed the slopes of Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area.
