THE WHITE MOUNTAINS – NEW HAMPSHIRE

The White Mountains are a segment of the U.S. Appalachian Mountains that extend 87 miles across north-central New Hampshire, and slightly into western Maine. The mountain range contains the highest elevations in the northeastern United States.

The loftiest peaks in the White Mountains (mostly between 5,000 and 6,000 feet), occur in a linear series of distinct summits that are named for U.S. presidents, and make up the Presidential Range. Mount Washington is the highest point in the range (6,288 feet) and the summit is reached by a highway and cog railway.

Subranges of the White Mountains include the Franconia Mountains and the Carter–Moriah and Sandwich ranges. The many rounded passes in the range are locally known as “notches,” and were carved by mountain glaciers. The most scenic of these notches are Crawford, Dixville, Franconia, Kinsman, and Pinkham. The northeastern edge of the mountains is marked by the Androscoggin and Ammonoosuc river valleys.

A large part of the range lies within the White Mountain National Forest, and only the highest summits reach above the timberline. The region has more than 1,000 miles of nature trails and numerous campsites, making it a favorite summer vacation area. The White Mountains also have several fine ski slopes and winter sports facilities.
