This beautiful poster has been re-mastered from an original 1964 racing poster for The Untouchable No. 6, a jet-powered dragster, racing at the Great Lakes Dragaway, in Union Lakes, Wisconsin on July 3, 4, 5, 1964. The Untouchable was matched against Art Malone’s U.S. 1 jet dragster. Art Arfon’s Green Monster jet dragster was also featured at this event.

THE UNTOUCHABLE JET DRAGSTER & GREAT LAKES DRAGAWAY
The Untouchable jet dragster, built by Oakland-based Romeo Palamides in the early 1960s, was a pioneering West Coast jet car, famous for setting a 287.704 mph speed record that stood in the Guinness Book of World Records for 13 years. Driven frequently by Bob "Jetcarbob" Smith, it was a staple of early 1960s drag exhibitions.
Romeo Palamides, an Oakland, California-based racer, constructed the car following his involvement in the ill-fated "Infinity" jet car project, which crashed in 1962. Bob Smith drove the Untouchable from 1962–1964, gaining the nickname "Jetcarbob."
The car utilized a J47 jet engine. On January 13, 1963, at Kingdon Dragstrip, the Untouchable set a record speed of 287.704 MPH, a mark that remained in the Guinness Book of World Records for 13 years. It was one of the first jet cars to compete in side-by-side match races against top fuel dragsters. The car was notoriously difficult to handle, and Bob Smith survived multiple crashes in 1963 and 1964. In October 1963, "Untouchable II," driven by Smith went off the end of the Union Grove track at roughly 245 mph after his helmet face mask covered his eyes, following the removal of a cracked windshield.
Palamides continued developing the cars, with later iterations including "Untouchable VI" (1965) and "Untouchable Twice" (1965-68). The Untouchable was instrumental in transitioning jet cars from novelty acts to serious, albeit dangerous, contenders on the drag strip, with Palamides also later developing rocket-powered cars.
GREAT LAKES DRAGAWAY
Opened in 1955 in Union Grove (now Paris), Wisconsin, Great Lakes Dragaway is the oldest continuously operated purpose-built dragstrip in the United States. Known as "The Biggest Little Track in the World," it was founded by Lynn and Marge Bennett to provide a safe, legal venue to curb street racing, and is renowned for its historic 1950s-era, red timber timing tower.
The track now operates under an International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) sanction. The track remains popular for its "fun racing" format, where the general public can race their own vehicles down the historic quarter-mile strip.
