HISTORY OF SNOW FOREST

The history of Snow Forest began in 1949, with the construction of the first lift in the Big Bear area. The facility was located at the south end of Pine Knot Avenue, just south of the village. The lift known as the “Clifford Lynn Chairlift,” was 3,080 ft. long, and had 60 chairs. It could carry 240 skiers per hour, and the ride from top to bottom took about 10 minutes.

In 1963, Dave and Dan Platus purchased the Lynn Lift ski area and renamed the operation Snow Forest. They expanded the facilities, and in 1967, they added a new 1,000 ft. Poma lift for beginner and intermediate skiers. The facility closed in 1973, and remained closed until the 1979-80 ski season.

The Platus brothers reopened the facility in 1980 with a new business partner named Bob Boothe. After a brief operating period, the brothers sold Snow Forest to Boothe, who made significant additions through the 83-84 season. The expansions increased the facility’s capacity to 2,000 skiers.

Snow Forest closed permanently in the late 1980s, due to a lack of business and an insufficient snow making operation.
