HISTORY OF SKIING IN THE WRIGHTWOOD AREA
In the early 1920s, the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation began developing Big Pines, a summer and winter park facility in the San Gabriel Mountains, west of Wrightwood. The county officially opened Big Pines Park in 1924. In 1929, a 1,150 ft world-class ski jump was completed in time for the park’s third annual winter carnival.
The Table Mountain Ski Area began operation in 1937 with a basic rope tow. The facilities were expanded, and the current day lodge was built in the 1952-53 season. The lodge was built with timber cleared from the ski runs, and a large addition was later added on the north side of the structure. Table Mountain was revitalized and renamed Ski Sunrise in 1975. In 2004, the resort was purchased by Mountain High, and renamed the Mountain High North Resort.
