HISTORY OF SNO-TREK SNOWMOBILES
The Sno-Trek SC-1 (often referred to as the Sno-Tric SC-1) was a significant early model in the history of European snowmobiling, produced by the Swedish company Aktiv Fischer AB (formerly AB Westeråsmaskiner) starting in the mid-1960s.
The SC-1 was manufactured by AB Westeråsmaskiner in Morgongåva, Sweden. The company, primarily known for agricultural equipment, began snowmobile production in 1957. In 1969, the company was renamed Aktiv Fischer AB after being acquired by Persson Invest.
While sold in Sweden as the Sno-Tric, the machines were rebranded as Sno-Trek for specific international markets. In Canada, they were sold through the Imperial Oil Company (Esso) under the Sno-Trek name. Some sources also associate Sno-Trek models with retailers like Montgomery Ward during the late 1960s.
The first Sno-Tric SC-1, built for the 1964–65 season, was essentially a direct copy of the Bombardier Ski-Doo. Early units were painted a "baby-blue" color.
The machine was developed as a small, economical utility vehicle intended for Lapplanders (Sámi people) in northern Sweden to shuttle gear between roads and remote cabins.
The SC-1 featured a simple, rugged design. In the early 1970s, Aktiv color-coded the lineup: Yellow for the smallest light model, Red for wide-track versions, and Blue for twin-track models. Most early models utilized a JLO L-297 engine.
Full-scale production peaked during the 1971–72 season, with approximately 800 units produced that year.
The Sno-Trek/Sno-Tric brand was eventually discontinued by the mid-1970s, with subsequent models simply bearing the Aktiv name. Today, these machines are considered rare collectibles for vintage snowmobile enthusiasts.
