Mount Hood and Timberline Lodge History
Mount Hood is Oregon's highest point and a prominent landmark visible up to 100 miles away. It is an 11,245-foot active volcano, with a history spanning over 500,000 years, characterized by geological eruptions.
The mountain is significant to Native American tribes (who call it Wy'East). British Lieutenant William Broughton was the first European to sight the mountain in 1792, and he named it after British Admiral Samuel Hood.
About 10,000 people attempt to climb Mount Hood each year. It has convenient access, though it presents some technical climbing challenges. There are no trails to the summit, with even the "easier" southside climbing route constituting a technical climb with crevasses, falling rocks, and often inclement weather. Ropes, ice axes, crampons and other technical mountaineering gear are necessary. Peak climbing season is generally from April to mid-June.
Constructed between 1936 and 1938 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project during the Great Depression, Timberline Lodge is a National Historic Landmark located on Oregon’s Mt. Hood. Dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937, it was designed as a premier year-round ski destination and is famous for its hand-crafted, artisan construction and as an exterior filming location for The Shining.
Skiing on Mount Hood began with a portable rope tow in 1938. The Magic Mile chairlift, one of the first in the U.S., opened in 1939. The addition of the Palmer Chairlift in 1983 solidified its status as the only ski area in North America with lift-serviced skiing 12 months a year.
