HISTORY OF CHRYSLER MARINE ENGINES
The Chrysler Company entered the marine engine market in 1927, and quickly became a major manufacturer of engines for nearly every variety of pleasure and commercial watercraft. During the 1940’s, Chrysler was supplying as much as 40% of the marine engine market.
The Chrysler Corporation was a leader in marine engines in the 1960’s, and in 1965, the company bought West Bend Outboard. This addition gave them 29% of the U.S. marine engine market and a large factory in Hartford, Wisconsin. West Bend outboards were also sold as Sears and Elgin, and the company became a new division called the Chrysler Outboard Corporation.
In addition to their full line of inboard and outboard motors, Chrysler produced a diverse line of watercraft including sailboats, small fishing boats, and fiberglass sports boats.
