HISTORY OF THE DATSUN 1600 ROADSTER
The Datsun 1600 Roadster (SP311), produced from 1965 to 1970, was a 96-horsepower, 1.6-liter convertible that established Nissan in the sports car market. Designed partly by Count Albrecht Goertz, it competed against British roadsters, offering superior reliability, a 4-speed gearbox, and independent front suspension. It was known as the Fairlady in Japan.
The 1600 Roadster, often referred to as the "Fairlady" in Japan, was built by Nissan from 1965 to 1970. It succeeded the 1500 Roadster (SP310) and was aimed squarely at the US market to compete with the MG and Triumph.
The car featured a 1,595cc R16 inline-four engine equipped with twin SU carburetors, delivering approximately 96 horsepower. It was capable of a top speed of over 100 mph (roughly 106 mph).
The 1600 had a 2-door convertible configuration with a 4-speed manual transmission. Early models (pre-1968) are known for their lower windshields, with later models receiving safety upgrades, including higher windshields and headrests.
It was recognized for its affordability, reliability, and "carefree" driving experience, making it popular in the U.S. It was, for a time, driven by Paul Newman, who helped establish the car's racing pedigree.
The 1967 model is particularly notable as it was the final year of the early, "low windshield" design before safety regulations changed the body style, and it serves as a bridge to the more powerful 2.0-liter 2000 roadster model.
The 1600 was officially replaced by the 2000 roadster and eventually the 240Z, solidifying its place in Nissan heritage.
