HISTORY OF SNO-CRAFT SNOWMOBILES
Trail-A-Sled, Inc. (TAS), based in Crosby, Minnesota, was a significant, pioneering, manufacturer that produced the early "Sno-Craft" snowmobiles (later known as Scorpions) in the early/mid 1960s.
The company founded by Glen Gutzman was established in the Crosby-Ironton area, with early development in Eagle Bend, Minnesota. They transitioned from producing air-driven (propeller driven), four-passenger air-sleds (1960–1962), to traditional snowmobiles with cleated tracks.
The "Sno-Craft" snowmobiles are Trail-A-Sled’s early, rare machines, and they were marketed by Brainerd Marine Supply Inc., in Brainerd MN. Production of the Sno-Craft machines ranged from 16 units in 1963 to 575 units by 1965.
The Trail-A-Sled company became better known for its "Scorpion" brand snowmobiles, which grew in popularity in the mid-1960s. Early models often used fiberglass bodies, two-cycle engines, and were marketed under the slogan "The only way to LIVE in winter!"
