HISTORY OF THE PETER PAN WOODLAND CLUB

The Peter Pan Woodland Club began in 1927 as a private “members only” club for people who purchased homes and lots in the new Big Bear City Subdivision.

The lodge and extensive facilities were located on the northwest corner of Greenway Blvd. and East Country Club Blvd., at the present-day site of Peter Pan Storage in Big Bear City.

The beautiful wooden lodge featured a spacious dining room, additional lounges, a coffee shop, a gymnasium, and a movie theater. There were no guest rooms in the clubhouse, but cabins surrounding the facility could be rented by club members.

The exterior of the grand clubhouse was lined with verandas and patios that provided sweeping views of the grounds, and the surrounding pine forest. The expansive outdoor swimming pool was built in a unique figure-eight shape. It was surrounded by concrete decking and a manicured lawn.

The grounds around the main building featured tennis courts, a private nine-hole golf course, bridle trails, and a toboggan slide for winter guests. The club offered duck hunting excursions on its private reserve at nearby Baldwin Lake, and a floating boathouse on Big Bear Lake provided all the necessities for fisherman. The recently completed Big Bear City Airport allowed guests to fly in from the surrounding cities.

The great clubhouse burned in 1948, but the surrounding facilities were still used for property owners and their guests. A 2-story lodge building was moved to the site in 1955, and the name of the facility was changed to the Peter Pan Rancho. The facility never regained its former grandeur, and was closed in the 1970’s.
