HISTORY OF THE PARADISE MESA DRAG STRIP
 
The Paradise Mesa Drag Strip began life in the early 1940s as an emergency airfield for the Navy and Army Airforce. It was located was located four miles east of the 32nd Street Naval Base on San Diego Bay. After the war, the airfield was abandoned, and street racers began using the runway for unauthorized drag racing in the late 1940s.
 
In the early 1950s, a group of local racing clubs banded together and formed The San Diego Timing Association (SDTA) to sponsor legal, sanctioned drag racing. The SDTA adopted the abandoned airfield for their new racetrack, and named it the Paradise Mesa Drag Strip. The strip soon became a mecca for San Diego area drag racers.
 
The SDTA published their first official rule book in 1952, and the book contained the first use of the word “dragster” in official racing documents. The strip was used until 1959, when it was permanently closed. Today, urban development has completely covered all traces of the track.
