HISTORY OF THE NIAGARA DRAG STRIP

Local businessman Taylor Johnson opened the Niagara Falls Airport Drag Strip in June, 1961, in a field just north of present-day Niagara Falls International Airport.

In September 1962, Niagara hosted the New York State Championship Drag meet, which attracted 244 racers, and 3,000 spectators to the new track. The track grew in popularity, but it also raised the ire of nearby residents, who complained about the excessive noise from the events. As a result, The Town of Niagara put major limitations on the strip’s hours and days of operation, making it extremely challenging for the facility to succeed financially.

Local racers and fans grew increasingly devoted to the track, and in 1963, Niagara Falls’ Deuces Wild car club took on the role of Niagara’s track crew. With each season, the track drew bigger names, and bigger events. The small local events helped drive the track’s growth into larger regional events. The Niagara Drag Strip made it into the big leagues in July 1964, when the NHRA officially sanctioned the track for their events.

The 1967 NASCAR Summer Nationals were the high point of the track’s major racing events. The newly sanctioned NASCAR Drag Racing division chose to hold their first national event at Niagara on August 18-20, and the event drew some of the era’s biggest names in drag racing.

In spite of the track’s success, the Town of Niagara’s dramatic limitation of only 21 operating days per year forced the facility to close in 1974.
