HISTORY OF CYPRUS

The Republic of Cyprus, is an island country in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Cyprus boasts a rich and complex history spanning millennia. Initially settled in the Paleolithic era, Cyprus saw the rise of farming communities by 8500 BC.

The island's strategic location and rich copper resources led to its contestation by various empires, including the Assyrians, Egyptians, and Persians. Alexander the Great's conquest in 333 BC brought Cyprus under Greek influence, followed by rule under Ptolemaic Egypt and the Roman Empire. After the fall of Rome, Cyprus became part of the Byzantine Empire, experiencing a Crusader period and later Ottoman rule.

Cyprus gained independence from Britain in 1960, though the island remains divided due to the ongoing Cyprus dispute between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Tourism in Cyprus is a cornerstone of the country's economy and has significantly impacted its culture and multicultural development throughout the years. In 2006, the tourism industry made up 10.7% of the country's GDP and the total employment in the tourism industry was estimated at 113,000 jobs. Cyprus welcomes at least around 4 million tourists on average each year, making it the 40th most popular destination in the world and the 6th most popular per capita of local population. Cyprus has been a full member of the World Tourism Organization since 1975.
