CHICAGO AND THE ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD & ARTIST PAUL PROEHL
The Illinois Central Railroad (reporting mark IC), sometimes called the Main Line of Mid-America, was a railroad in the central United States, with its primary routes connecting Chicago, Illinois, with New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama. A line also connected Chicago with Sioux City, Iowa (1870). There was a significant branch to Omaha, Nebraska (1899), west of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and another branch reaching Sioux Falls, South Dakota (1877), starting from Cherokee, Iowa. The Sioux Falls branch has been abandoned in its entirety.
The Canadian National Railway acquired control of the IC in 1998.

PAUL PROEHL – AMERICAN ARTIST, 1887 -1965
Paul Proehl studied architecture at the University of Illinois (1907-1910), and he later worked as a draftsman and designer for many buildings in Chicago. Attending Chicago art schools, Proehl became an advertising artist beginning around 1918. In 1924, Proehl became a partner at Palenske Young, a well-known Chicago illustration studio located on North Michigan Ave. From that point on, Proehl's illustrations appeared in national magazines for over thirty years.
During 1938-52, he created art for annual calendars and dining car menus used by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. He also created stylish posters for the Illinois Central Railroad that featured prominent, beautiful young woman.
