The Macintosh (or Mac) is a family of personal computers designed, manufactured, and sold by Apple Inc. (originally as Apple Computer, Inc.) since 1984. The company was founded in 1976 by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs.
 
The original Macintosh was the first successful mass-market all-in-one desktop personal computer with a graphical user interface (GUI), built-in screen, and mouse. The Mac was also marketed as a portable unit that could be carried in a bag, making it useful in the office as well as at home or travelling. The portability of the unit spurred the later development of the laptop computer. Apple sold the Mac alongside its popular Apple II series until the others were discontinued in the 1990s.
 
Early Macintosh models were relatively expensive, hindering competitiveness in a market dominated by the cheaper or more widely-compatible competitors, such as Commodore 64 or IBM PC and its clones.
