HISTORY OF SEARS & ROEBUCK & CO. AMERICAN BEAUTY BUGGIES
In 1894, Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears Roebuck & Co., provided financing to William McCurdy to establish the Brighton Buggy Co. Rosenwald arranged a deal with McCurdy to supply the giant catalog company with an extensive line of buggies. In the ensuing years, the Sears Roebuck Company consumed most of the company’s buggy output.
In 1902, McCurdy moved the buggy company’s production to Evansville Indiana, where he established the Hercules Buggy Company. The company manufactured the American Beauty Buggy line for sale in the Sears catalog. In 1905, the Hercules Company began building automobiles, for Sears Roebuck & Co. In 1912, the company the Hercules Gas Engine Company, and continued producing gasoline engines until 1934.
